Damming the Michell River The National Party in East Gippsland is continuing its push to build a dam on the Mitchell River or on its tributaries. Both the State Government and the Liberal Opposition have said they will not allow dams on the Mitchell. The Victorian Parliament is expected to vote this week on legislation to extend a ban on new dams in heritage river areas. National’s candidate for Gippsland East Chris Nixon says the Government wants to maintain natural flows in the Mitchell and into the Gippsland Lakes. He says the government wants the flows to counteract the proposed use of treated effluent for industry in the Latrobe Valley. "It's going to put a huge pressure on the fresh water supply of the lakes system," Mr Nixon said. The conclusion in my view is that in the long runit would help melbourne through its water crisis but coming up with a long time effective. The sacrifice would be costly.
